The Voice

December 17, 2014

So the Voice finale was on last night, and every time one of these competition shows rolls around, I sometimes wonder about the American public’s taste in music, and the ultimate result was certainly not an exception to the rules. And no, it’s not because he’s country, I’ve kind of gotten over my loathing for country music, as deep-seated as it was. And no, I’m not opposed to him winning because he has the same name as me. Us Craigs gotta stick together after all. But on a show called the Voice, you are voting for who has the best Voice, and Craig Wayne Boyd surely doesn’t have a better voice than Damien, Matt McAndrew, and Chris Jamison, who all seem to have more mass appeal as chameleon artists, than Craig does sticking to one type of thing. But that is also not a problem. But what is strange is that Matt McAndrew topped the download charts on Itunes at the time of the finale last night. So apparently the most popular person on the show still can’t win. Oh well, all four of them got to drive off in brand new Nissans, and each of their new singles are phenomenal, and better than what I have come to expect from finalists on this show, as much as I have loved a few contestants here and there in the past.

Making Spirits Bright

December 13, 2014

Look no further than making a copy of Bastille’s brand new mixtape, or download it yourself off of Itunes right now. Vs, features some amazing collaborators, and grandiose instrumentations that are trademark Bastille through and through. Dan Smith and co. have been on a high since their band exploded on the charts, and ever since I managed to see them live twice this year, I can’t stop talking about them or listening to them for that matter. What a year it must be for them. This mixtape seamlessly blends Hip Hop beats, orchestra sounds, stripped down raw acoustic sounds, computerized blips and clicks like most artists could only dream of. But of course Bastille has had help making this, I mean why else is it referred to as a mixtape as opposed to an album. I absolutely loved early leaked tracks, Torn Apart and Weapon, as well as the hauntingly mellow, The Driver, but now that all nine tracks are available to me, I think mixtape isn’t even a fair description of this. It is definitely a general theme as mournful as Oblivion and as uplifting as Pompeii, and all nine tracks added up together seem like one whole unit. Certainly no Rock Opera, but certainly something unlike any other.

Lessons..

August 30, 2014

Are you tired, stressed, overwhelmed, underwhelmed, just some kind of “whelmed,” happy, sad, angry, insecure, nervous, anxious, or any other variety of emotions? Congratulations! You have just realized what it means to be alive and possess a consciousness. People that don’t feel pain are probably lying to you. People who can’t feel two or more contradictory emotions at the exact same time must be robots programmed to only feel one thing. You can’t just feel one thing, it doesn’t work that way. You can however feel one thing so much more strongly than others, whether it’s faith, love, or connected to your spiritual path, etc. And isn’t that sometimes the best and worst feeling? Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. See what I did there? But basically, if you feel so strongly about this thing, if it’s this important to you, try not to lose sight of it, try not to be discouraged, and just let certain things fall as they may. You’ll be glad you did.

Your Sunny Day Playlist

May 15, 2014

Surprise, it’s not a playlist, it’s me talking about music instead.  With the onset of some early Summer days within the last week, it is only reasonable that I would begin to talk about summer music listening things.  Your hot and sunny day music choices, particularly when driving a car, can go one of two ways.  Well that isn’t entirely true, but for the sake of my blog, let’s say there are only two.  You can go the raucous route, maybe not of the angrier variety, but I guess it depends on how you feel that day.  I would think maybe Helter Skelter, or something by Zeppelin, maybe the Black Keys, or say Paris by Grace Potter.  Raucous jams are all around us. How about some White Stripes?  But then again, there is another route, the happy carefree, laid back sort of music.  Try some Flaming Lips on for size, maybe some Sigur Ros?  or that great purveyor of sunshine: Michael Franti.  But maybe you don’t go in either of these directions and settle for some kind of mix of the two which would ideally consist of some Pixies, early Radiohead, most anything by Bowie, maybe some Nirvana, the choice is yours truly.  Mix the happy chill sounds with the upbeat, loud and downright rockin’ and you will surely have your ideal sunny day playlist.  Enjoy!

Eyes Open: Open For Business

May 7, 2014

A  website shall be forthcoming for my mixed media enterprise that I call Eyes Open.  This is the future of production, people.  i can’t wait to share it with you, and get it up and running.  Though that being said, it is open for business. Eyes Open is more than a production house, more than a business, more than a collaborative art adventure.  It’s a community, a place to teach as well as learn, a place with growth and improvement at the heart and soul of the thing.  It will not be an actual physical place for some time now. But let’s just say by the end of this year, Eyes Open will become more than dream.  For we walk the fine line between waking and dreaming here at Eyes Open, and doing what we love should be able to sustain us in a perfect world. And athough this is far from a perfect world, I think going forward, with our endeavors, we can help better this world.  Working on new songs, networking and trying to finish writing my book, all as part of the whole, to bring Eyes Open truly to the masses by year’s end!  Join us.

The 802

March 14, 2014

It’s very hard to come up with a band name simply because you want something original(ish) and also something that truly belongs to you on a deeper level. Maybe you don’t. I mean, if that were the case most of the really good bands wouldn’t exist. But I do like the idea of coming up with things that really mean something to me. And then it struck me. Why can’t it be something really simple?  The 802 popped into my head, being a lifelong Vermont body and a person who truly wants to let that flag fly as part of his identity. So expect the album sometime in the next ten years.  But don’t expect us to have the name The 802.  Lord knows I’ll change it by then. 😉
